Pricing

Every family history question is different. My pricing reflects a structured, evidence-based approach designed to provide clarity before committing to deeper research.

Genealogy Research Assessment

Most projects begin with a Genealogy Research Assessment. This is the entry point for working together.

The assessment focuses on one clearly defined research question and evaluates whether the available evidence supports it.

What’s Included

  • Review of key records and known facts
  • Analysis of names, relationships, dates, and locations
  • Identification of evidentiary strengths, gaps, and conflicts
  • A written summary with conclusions and recommended next steps

Flat fee: $500
Typical turnaround: 2–3 weeks

This step is designed to provide clarity — not to “solve everything.”

Assisted Research Assessment

Some clients need help gathering, organizing, or clarifying materials before an assessment can begin.

In those cases, I offer an Assisted Research Assessment, which includes preparatory support in addition to the standard assessment.

Fee: $650–$750 (depending on complexity)

Focused Genealogy Research (Phase 2)

If the assessment indicates that further research is warranted, I will propose a follow-on project with clearly defined scope.

Phase 2 research may include targeted archival research, cross-record analysis, or extended family reconstruction —
always grounded in evidence and realistic expectations.

Phase 2 work is quoted separately based on scope, time, and complexity.

What Is Not Included

To keep work focused and responsible, the following are not included in the assessment:

  • Extended archival retrieval beyond readily available records
  • Reconstruction of unrelated family branches
  • Correction of entire online family trees
  • Immigration disasters or unrelated identity investigations
  • DNA analysis beyond high-level interpretive guidance
  • Formal lineage proofs or publication-ready reports

Additional work can always be discussed and proposed separately.

Next Steps

If you’re considering working together, the best place to start is a focused assessment.

I’m happy to review your question and let you know whether an assessment is the right next step.

“I hired Gary to help uncover the identity of my mysterious paternal
great-grandfather, and he went above and beyond. The experimental tree he
created helped me understand my ancestry in a much deeper way. I was impressed
by how thorough he was and relieved knowing every possible record had been explored”
